The Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

The universe presented me with this wonderful poem when I was in the midst of personal crisis, a dark night of the soul. We were on vacation and staying in a lovely B and B near the ocean. As we were packing up to leave, I picked up a wee community directory that was placed among the brochures and maps our hostess had provided. Printed on the back was Mary Oliver's poem. I quickly scribbled it down and stuck it in my pocket. I carried it home with me and placed it on my fridge. It inspired me through a very bleak and trying time. Months later I created a vision board. I placed a typed copy of the poem on my board and then tacked it to my fridge as a reminder of my "place in the family of things".  I surrendered and opened myself to possibility.  The universe, as always, responded... Today, I am delighted to tell you that my family and I are living in the house where I found this touching poem....
